ICE Particles Falling Like Leaves

You can make particles fall and flutter as leaves do using the Leaf Falling Motion compound. This compound is useful for doing effects such as leaves falling off trees, paper or money fluttering down from a building, or pieces of confetti being thrown at a wedding.

Note that this compound is provided mostly an example of how to build a custom motion from vector math. Because it lets you create a specific type of effect, you may want to customize this compound to meet the needs of your own particular effect.

To make particles fall like leaves

1. Create a particle simulation—see Creating ICE Particle Emissions.

2. In the ICE view, click the Task tab on preset manager on the left and select Particles.

3. Drag the Leaf Falling Motion compound from the Motion Control group into the ICE view.

4. Plug this compound’s Execute output into a Port on the ICETree node.

5. In the Leaf Falling Motion property editor, you can change the gravity strength and direction, set the amount that particles roll (tumble) around their local Z axis or spin around their local Y axis, and add a lift force to act as an upward force or draft.

Try adding a Turbulize or Randomize compound to the Gravity or Lift ports to create more turbulence and random movement to the particles!
