Sharing Simple Customizations

With some type of customizations, you can install them on other machines of users simply by copying a single file to the appropriate subdirectory of the user or workgroup location. The following types of customizations can be shared in this way:

• Presets (*.Preset files) in the Data\DSPresets subdirectories, as long as there is no associated SPDL file or it has already been installed.

• Toolbars and shelves (*.xsitb files) in the Application\toolbars subdirectory.

• Layouts (*.xsily files) in the Application\layouts subdirectory. If the layout uses bitmaps for buttons, don’t forget to copy them in the Application\layouts\bitmaps directory.

• Relational views (*.xsivw files) in the Application\views subdirectory. Again, if the view uses bitmaps for buttons, don’t forget to copy them in the Application\layouts\bitmaps directory.

• Key maps (*.DSKeymap files) in the Data\Preferences\KeyMaps subdirectory.

• Self-installing plug-ins in the Application\Plugins subdirectory. These can be compiled (*.dll or *.so files) or scripted (*.vbs, *.js, *.pls, or *.pys files).

However, if a customization consists of several files, then you should package them in an add-on for distribution so that all files are kept together. For example, you should use an add-on if a toolbar includes a button for a custom command, or if a relational view uses bitmaps for a switcher.

The types of customization listed below cannot be installed simply by copying a file. However, they can be packaged in an add-on file or, in the case of *.spdl files, installed manually.

• Shaders, scripted operators, and other customizations defined in *.spdl files.

• The older form of non-self-installing plug-ins (*.dll or *.so files).

• The older form of toolbars (*.DSToolbar files).

For information about add-ons, see Working with Add-ons.
