Softimage includes a variety of lighting effects that you can use to enhance the realism of your scenes. Creating glows, flares, volumics, and subsurface scattering effects are all ways to help you create more realistic surfaces and alter the look and mood of your rendered scenes.

Have a look at the scene shown above. It uses a glow effect to light the neon sign, a volumic effect to properly display the light coming through the window, depth fading to create the foggy look of the background, and a lens flare adds the finishing touch to the street lamp.
Different effects are applied differently. Some, like glows, lens flares and volumic effects, are applied as properties of scenes, lights, or objects. Surface effects like subsurface scattering are defined by shaders in the render tree. All of these effects can go a long way toward making your scenes look just the way you want them to.
