Bending Particle Strands

The Bend Strands and Bend Strands Towards Vector compounds bend the strands in different ways, helping you create a wind-blown or underwater look to the strands.

Note that you can use the Bend Strand/Vector and Twist Strand compounds together to create cool shapes, but remember that the order in which they’re plugged into the ICETree node matters in terms of how they’re applied: the top compound always gets evaluated first.

Bending Strands

To bend strands

1. Create a particle emission—see Creating ICE Particle Emissions for information.

2. In the ICE tree’s preset manager, click the Task tab and select Particles.

3. Create strands using either the Create Strands or Generate Strand Trails compound from the Strands group.

4. Drag the Bend Strand compound from the Strands group into the ICE view.

5. Plug its Execute output into a Port on the ICETree node.

6. In the Bend Strand property editor, you can select how quickly or accurately you want the bending to be, set the bend angle, the bend profile curve that defines how the angle is applied to the strand from base to tip, and set the bend direction using either the global (world) axis or the particle’s local axis.

Plug a Turbulize compound into the Bend Axis port to create randomly moving strands.

Bending Strands Towards a Vector

In addition to bending strands along the global axis or a particle’s local axis, you can bend the strands toward an axis vector that you define. All strands try to bend along that same target vector.

To bend strands towards a vector

1. Create strands using either the Create Strands or Generate Strand Trails compound from the Strands group, as described previously.

2. Drag the Bend Strand Towards Vector compound from the Strands group into the ICE view.

3. Plug its Execute output into a Port on the ICETree node.

4. In the Bend Strand Towards Vector property editor, you can set the bend amount, set the target vector values, and modify the bend profile curve that defines how the bend is applied to the strand from base to tip. By default, not much bend is applied to the strand base, but then the full amount is applied by the tip of the strand.
