Texturing

Texturing is the process of adding color and texture to an object. You can use textures to define everything from basic surface color to more tactile characteristics like bumps or dirt. Textures can also be used to drive a wide variety of shader parameters, allowing you to create maps that define an object’s transparency, reflectivity, bumpiness, and so on.

This guide describes tools and methods for texturing objects in Autodesk® Softimage®.

Texturing Basics
Describes the types of textures you can use, the various components of each texture in a scene, and basic techniques for applying textures to objects.

Clips & Sources
Contains important information about managing the image clips and sources that are added to the scene when you apply image textures to objects.

Projections and Supports
Provides detailed information about the various projection methods you can use to apply textures to objects, as well as information about how to apply and edit projections and their support objects.

Working with UVs in the Texture Editor
Contains detailed information about editing an object’s UV coordinates to control how different parts of a texture correspond to an object’s surface.

Texture Layering
Explains how to apply textures in layers, as well as how to use either the texture layer editor or the render tree to work with texture layers and control how they are blended together.

Controlling Surface Attributes with Textures
Describes ways of driving various object attributes, such as bump mapping, transparency, reflection, and so on using textures.

Generating and Baking Surface Attribute Maps (RenderMap)
Describes how to use the RenderMap property to bake complex texture, illumination and other surface information into texture images that can be re-used in the scene.

Lightmaps
Provides a general overview of light mapping and how it is used in Softimage, as well as information about using the Color Sampler lightmap shader.

Vertex Colors
Describes how to use a Color at Vertices (CAV) property to paint and store color directly in an object’s vertices. Also explains how to use the RenderVertex tool to bake surface attributes into a CAV property.
