Toon and Non-Photoreal Effects

Non-photorealistic or cartoon-style effects are easy to achieve using Autodesk Softimage’s Toon shaders. Giving your scene a fully cel-animated look requires two components:

• A Toon lens shader applied to the cameras.

This lens shader lets you control the way the image’s contours—or ink—are rendered over the image

• A Toon material shader applied to the objects.

This material shader controls basic cel-style surface shading and refines the inking on a per-object basis.

Although Toon shader attributes are referred to in cel-animation terms, you can also use these shaders to create a nearly endless variety of non-photorealistic effects. You can texture and otherwise alter almost all of the toon shaders’ parameters (using the render tree), which allows you to incorporate the full range of Softimage shaders into your toon and non-photoreal scenes.
